NotShot vs a traditional photoshoot for a DTC catalog: a real comparison

Published 2026-07-30

We built NotShot to remove the coordination cost of a catalog shoot, not to pretend a real shoot doesn't have real strengths. Here's the comparison as we'd actually make it ourselves.

Turnaround

A real shoot needs a booking window, usually weeks out once you account for a photographer's calendar, a studio, and a model. On NotShot, you upload a garment and a model photo and get a judge-graded 4K render back in under an hour. If your launch date moves, that difference is the whole story.

Cost per look

On NotShot, a shipped 4K render runs 5 credits, a lighting pass 4 credits, a texture pass 2 credits, at roughly $0.50 per credit by default (less at volume). A single look you're not happy with costs a few dollars to redo. A reshoot day on a traditional shoot means rebooking the model, the studio, and the photographer, that's a materially bigger decision to make twice.

Where the real shoot still wins

If your brand story depends on a specific physical location, a specific real person's actual presence for reasons beyond the garment, or an art director making live calls in the room, that's not something a render replaces. We'd say so plainly rather than oversell it.

Where NotShot is built to hold up

Every render is scored by an AI judge before it's delivered, and anything sub-threshold auto-refunds the credit, we don't charge for a result that didn't work. The customer's own model identity is preserved through the render rather than swapped for a generic stock face, so a full catalog stays coherent across every look.

Questions we get asked

Do I need a subscription to try NotShot?
No, it's pay-per-action credits, no subscription. New accounts get 100 free credits at signup, no card required.
What happens if a render doesn't come out right?
It's judge-scored before delivery, and anything that falls below the quality bar auto-refunds the credit rather than getting billed.
Can I mix NotShot with a real shoot?
Yes, most brands we work with use it to fill gaps between real shoots or validate a collection before committing to one, not as an all-or-nothing replacement.

NotShot is a Berlin-based tool for on-model product photography without the photoshoot.
